Newborn Carter foal |
Carter Reservoir mare and foal adopted by Brian and Jona Kalayjian |
Do you have a horse from the Carter Reservoir HMA? Do you know that this group of wild horses has been blood-typed by Dr. Gus Cothran of the University of Kentucky, and found to have rare blood markers that indicate that they are direct descendants of the original horses brought by the Spanish conquerors in the 1500's? The Carter Reservoir HMA was gathered by BLM in late summer of 2003. All but 25 of the Carter herd is now in captivity and dispersed to the various individual adopters. Jona Kalayjian has begun a Registry for these special horses, to preserve their breed character and special lineage.

| Most of the Carter Reservoir horses display dun "primitive markings" including red dun, classic (zebra, or bay) dun, and grullo, or the base colors of red, black, or bay, without the dun factor. Here are two "non-conforming" individuals - a bay dun with Appaloosa spotting and a very "loud" red Overo colt. (If you want to learn more about color and the genetics behind color, see Nancy Kerson's Color Pages. | |
